Dec 15: North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, have approved the project of “Promotion of Fishery and Piggery fattening in the North East India” at a project cost of Rs. 490.82 lakhs. So far, NEC had released an amount of Rs. 196.32 lakh to North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS), Shillong.
Project is being implemented in the Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh, Karbi Anglong district in Assam, Imphal West, Senapati, Churachandpur, Pherzawl and Tamenglong districts of Manipur, and West Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills districts in Meghalaya.
Objective of the project is to provide employment and income opportunities to the rural communities and at the same to augment the production statistics of state in order to enhance the volume, value addition and promote outflow of resources from the region. Project aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To establish fish pond for quality production of table fish.
- To establish piggery fattening units for quality production of pork meat.
- To increase the production of table fish and fresh pork meat to meet the demands of local and nearby markets.
- To doubling farmer’s income through table fish and fresh pork meat.
- To minimise the import of fresh fish and pork meat and supply the surplus to outside markets.
Out of the total released amount, an amount of Rs. 12,88/- Lakhs was used for setting up of 15 (fifteen) piggery fattening units in West Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya which have benefitted 15 (fifteen) farmers. Mr. Rangeh Kupar Wanshnong, Consultant (Agriculture), Agri & Allied Sector of North Eastern Council, Shillong also visited the project site to inspect pig fattening units and also interacted with the beneficiaries.
