Feb 06: India will be hosting the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Aquatic Championship 2024 in New Delhi from 5-10 February 2024, as an initiative to foster regional cooperation spirit in the Bay of Bengal Region.
The Championship will be inaugurated by Shri Anurag Thakur, Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs and Information and Broadcasting along with Mr. Dig Bahadur Limbu, Minister of Youth and Sports, Government of Nepal, on 6 February 2024. Shri Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs and Shri Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General, BIMSTEC will be present on the occasion. More than 400 sportspersons and officials from seven member countries (i.e. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka & Thailand) will participate in the event.
The Bay of Bengal Region is home to the largest young population in the world. In recent years, the Region is also emerged as one of the promising pools of sports talent all over the world. The Region has a rich and diverse pool of traditional games which are increasingly becoming attractive and popular globally and are becoming part of international sports.
The BIMSTEC Aquatic Championship will play a catalytic role in making the Bay of Bengal Region a sports powerhouse. This initiative will lead towards the creation of a culture of games and sports for the world’s youngest Region
